“Rock With You” was a large ensemble production created with a highly synchronized 13-person dance crew. The project emphasized rigorous pre-production and precise coordination between choreography, camera movement, and editing.
It became an important early large-scale production for Shicheng’s creative workflow, establishing methods that continue to inform later projects: multi-layer reference analysis, detailed storyboarding, shot-size planning, and camera movement designed around musical cuts.
Behind the Design
The original Seventeen performance video was studied shot by shot. The director organized the reference across approximately four to five timeline layers, separating wide, medium, and close coverage so that changes in angle, distance, timing, and editorial cut points could be understood clearly.
The resulting storyboard adapted the original camera language while planning for the dancers, location, and available production conditions. Two 600-watt lights were used as frontal sources to maintain clear, bright skin tones across a very large group. The final grade further refined facial brightness and consistency.
The production was completed in approximately three to four hours. The dancers’ preparation and synchronization allowed the crew to move efficiently through a complex 13-person performance with limited unnecessary retakes.
