Whiplash - aespa

- December 2024

- Moonlight Studio
- Collaboration
- YouShow Lab
“Whiplash” was the first collaboration between Shicheng and YouShow Lab. Rather than reproducing aespa’s existing performance video or music video, the film developed an independent visual treatment within a white studio environment.
Two full performance groups were filmed, with one selected for the final portfolio presentation.
Behind the Design
The visual language was created without relying on the original performance camera plan. Instead, the production incorporated selected typographic influences from the music video and developed its own transitions and effects.
A key motif uses red silhouettes cutting against the white cyclorama. Near the repeated “Whiplash” phrase, rapid changes between the red silhouette treatment and the clean white space create a flashing visual rhythm tied directly to the music.
By the time of this production, the camera operator had already filmed several interpretations of “Whiplash,” allowing the choreography and movement patterns to be handled with fluency. The complete project was captured in approximately two hours, followed by an effects-heavy edit designed to give the film its own identity.
