“Psycho” was filmed with six dancers in a studio space more commonly suited to a smaller group. The project used diagonal composition, layered lighting, and careful camera placement to expand the perceived width and depth of the room.
Behind the Design
The camera was positioned and moved along diagonal lines so six performers could be staged clearly without the studio appearing compressed. The production explored multiple original angles rather than recreating an existing performance video.
The studio’s overhead rig made it possible to build changing red and white top-light states. A red backlight added separation and depth, while two 600-watt front sources kept skin tones clean and readable against the saturated background.
The central visual challenge was to preserve natural, bright faces while allowing the environment to remain intensely red. Camera position, exposure, lighting balance, and post-production were designed together to keep the performers from inheriting the background color cast.
